Some Myths About Ex-racehorses
Is it cruel to race horses as 2 year olds?
Over half our thoroughbreds have raced as 2 year olds, they have nice
temperaments having been handled so young. One or two are much admired in
other forms of competition in their new life, so we don't agree with the statement.
Will they gallop off flat out when asked for canter?
Not very likely. If an ex-racehorse hasn't been ruined by lack of knowledge
when it finished racing, it should have a good mouth and good back. These
horses will only have been ridden in the kindest of bits, by professional
Jockeys. Re-training a thoroughbred takes more time and patience than with
other breeds. They are intelligent and they will go much better if you get
them working with you, not for you.
Are they scatty and bad tempered?
Not very often. These horses are broken as yearlings and ridden as two year
olds, so they are used to being handled and being ridden out with other horses.
All our horses live in, are fed three times a day, but far from being hyped
up, they are able to offer enjoyable hacking and tuition for the vast majority
of riders.
Are ex-racehorses suitable for anything else?
They are the ultimate performance horse, they are natural athletes and
have the advantage that about 25% more of their weight is made up of bone
and muscle compared with other similar sized horses.
Many have gone on to compare at top level in other equestrian sports.
